THE PORSCHE 911 CARRERA TYPE G

In 1973, the 911 has been around for 10 years, and PORSCHE will launch the no less famous type G.

Aesthetics:

At that time, PORSCHE wanted to penetrate the American market, and for that, it had to adapt its cars to American safety legislation. Porsche engineers developed the famous bumpers, characteristic of the 911 Type G. Easily recognizable thanks to their bellows, they could absorb shocks, sinking up to 50 mm without the mechanical parts suffering the slightest damage. New front seats also appear, with integrated headrests.

From an engine point of view, the Flat 6 is still there, with a displacement of 2.7 liters (the Carrera RS engine of the previous generation).

It will then go down to 3 liters, for homologation questions (in less than 3l, most of the racing versions will consist of 3l SC or Super Carrera.

The last of the series being the 911 Carrera 3.2 liters in 1983, developing 231 horsepower.

Performances:

Engine performance level, the 3-liter 6-cylinder of the 911 Turbo will reach peaks in terms of performance in 1974. Porsche was also one of the pioneers in developing and using turbo engines.

Developed on the circuits, with the fabulous RSR, 2 nd at MANS 1974, which foreshadowed the no less fabulous 935, the 260 horses were there at first, but with a high response time making its use delicate, requiring more piloting than simple driving.

The switch to a cubic capacity of 3.3l in 1977, and the installation of an additional heat exchanger made it possible to achieve a power of 300 hp.

0 to 100 km / h in 5.2s, almost 260km / h was just as incredible

And before the 911 Type G?

The Frankfurt Motor Show on September 12, 1963, Porsche caused a sensation by unveiling its fifth and last prototype, dubbed “901”.

This announces the arrival of the famous PORSCHE 911.

STORY :

Let us go back 4 years, in 1959, date of the appearance of the first prototype of the 911, the “T7” project.

The PORSCHE 356 is at the end of its race, aging, and the new prototype must take “the main lines”, so as to ensure a certain continuity, but It must be more powerful, larger, with a wheelbase increased by 20 cms

Many prototypes will emerge, with very different technical and mechanical solutions: This freedom in the design generates a relatively large number of prototypes with different technical solutions, in particular water cooling, air cooling and even a mixture of the two with an engine. having the cylinder heads cooled by air, and the cylinders by oils.

The head of the Body Department, Erwin Komenda, is the only one who has decided on the line of the Porsche range, but for him lines and design are abstract notions.

Ferry Porsche’s son, Butzi, creates a team to deal with this “problem”, and will define a simple and easy to produce project, essential elements, with 2 front seats and 2 rear seats.

This project already offers a first big advantage compared to the 356, a better coefficient of penetration in the air.

Its manufacture began in September 1964. It then has the famous six-cylinder 2.0 l which currently develops 130 hp. The steering column is telescopic, which is an innovation at this time.

Presentation of the first 911

This 911 has a family resemblance that we can not dispute, we find the main features of the Porsche 356. Much more glass surface, a different windshield, an instrument panel that would become one of the characteristics of the 911, with its centrally placed tachometer, an obvious sign of its sporting destination.

The first generation is built, marketed in 1964, and entirely manufactured by Porsche.

The 911 still current

Fifty years later, the 911 is still produced and marketed in its latest version, the 992, and has truly become the emblem of the brand. The engine type has remained the same until today, with the famous “flat six 6”, 6 cylinders flat in rear overhang.

The 911 is Porsche’s most famous model. Eight generations have followed one another.

The total production of 911 Type G was 198,496 units between 1973 and 1989.

On May 11, 2017, the millionth Porsche 911 produced rolled off the production lines.
